How do I know if there's a TPO?
The council holds the register. Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire are separate authorities with separate lists, so which one you ask depends on where you live. We check as part of the free visit.
This is the question that catches people out, and the fines are real. Two things restrict what you can do to a tree in the North East — and both are the council's call, not yours or ours.
A TPO means written consent is needed from the planning authority before you prune or fell — even on your own land, and even if the tree is causing you a problem.
Conservation areas carry their own restrictions on tree works, and much of central Aberdeen along with several Aberdeenshire villages sits inside one. The rules are separate from TPOs and apply whether or not an individual order exists.
We check both before we quote, and we'll make the application on your behalf at no charge. If a tree is protected and someone offers to take it down without mentioning any of this, that is the moment to get a different quote.

There are exemptions for genuinely dangerous trees, but they are narrower than people assume and you may still need to notify the council. Photograph everything before work starts.
Unauthorised works to a protected tree is a criminal offence, and the penalties are substantial. You can also be required to plant a replacement.
TPOs cover trees rather than hedges, but high hedges have their own legislation in Scotland and neighbours can apply to have one reduced. Different process, same principle — ask first.
Separate law again, and it applies to every tree regardless of protection. It's an offence to disturb an active nest, so between March and August we check before anything is cut.
Us, if you'd like. We prepare and submit the application at no charge and deal with the case officer. It typically takes a few weeks, so factor that into your timing.
General guidance, not legal advice. The council is always the authority on whether a specific tree is protected and what consent it needs — and we'll ask them on your behalf before quoting.
